What does graduation mean on Pons?
On Pons V2, every token launches onto its own bonding curve rather than directly into a liquidity pool. Graduation is the point at which that curve has taken in enough volume to trigger an automatic migration: the curve closes to further trading, and liquidity is deployed into a Uniswap v4 pool behind a Pons-owned hook, locked permanently.
Nothing about graduation requires action from the creator. It is a factory-level rule enforced by the contract once the threshold is crossed - the same mechanism applies to every V2 launch on the same quote asset.
Why 4.2 ETH for native-quoted launches
For a token launched against native ETH, the graduation threshold is 4.2 ETH of cumulative volume through the bonding curve. Once that figure is reached, the curve sells out and the automatic migration into the graduated Uniswap v4 pool fires.
This is a fixed, protocol-level number for ETH-quoted launches - it is not something a creator sets when configuring a token, and it does not move based on a token's market cap, holder count or trading pattern. Two tokens launched an hour apart under the same quote asset graduate at the same cumulative volume figure.
What happens at the moment of graduation
Three things happen together when a launch crosses the threshold.
- The bonding curve closes: once the curve sells out, trading on the curve itself stops - reaching the threshold only confirms the curve sold out, not that any particular price or market cap has been reached.
- Liquidity moves into a locked Uniswap v4 pool: the migrated liquidity sits behind a Pons-owned hook, and the position is locked permanently - nobody, including the creator, can withdraw it after graduation.
- The fee model switches venue: both the curve and the graduated pool charge a 1% trade fee, but the pool itself does not take a separate pool-level fee on top - all fee collection routes through the hook rather than the AMM pool fee tier.
Graduating with a non-ETH quote asset
Pons V2 launches are not limited to ETH as the pairing asset. A launch can be quoted against other approved assets, including USDG, tokenised stocks and cbBTC, depending on what the factory has approved.
For any of these non-native quote assets, the graduation threshold is set per asset rather than defaulting to the 4.2 ETH figure used for native launches. A creator planning a launch against a non-ETH quote asset should treat 4.2 ETH as the ETH-specific reference point, not a universal number that applies regardless of pairing asset.
What graduation does and does not guarantee
It is easy to read graduated as a signal of success, but the mechanism only confirms one specific thing: the curve reached its volume threshold and liquidity is now locked in a Uniswap v4 pool.
- It does not confirm the token's price will hold after graduation - trading continues normally in the graduated pool, with all the price risk that implies.
- It does not confirm the creator behaved as expected before graduation - a high creator tax within the protocol's allowed cap, or a large developer buy, are both compatible with a token that still reaches graduation.
- It does not confirm liquidity depth in the graduated pool will be large relative to trading interest - the migrated amount is a function of the threshold, not of demand after graduation.
- Locked liquidity removes one specific risk - a creator or protocol pulling the pool - without removing normal market risk.
Tracking progress toward graduation
Because the threshold is fixed and cumulative, progress toward it is straightforward to read directly from the bonding curve contract: cumulative volume against the 4.2 ETH figure, or the relevant per-asset figure for non-ETH quotes, gives a simple percentage-to-graduation. A launch interface that surfaces this figure alongside the live anti-snipe tax rate gives a fuller picture of where a token sits in its lifecycle - still on the curve and subject to the opening tax window, approaching graduation, or already migrated into a locked pool.
FAQ
- What is the Pons graduation threshold? For tokens launched against native ETH, it is 4.2 ETH of cumulative bonding curve volume. Tokens launched against other approved quote assets graduate at a threshold set specifically for that asset.
- What happens to liquidity when a Pons token graduates? It migrates from the bonding curve into a Uniswap v4 pool behind a Pons-owned hook, where it is locked permanently and cannot be withdrawn by the creator or anyone else after graduation.
- Does graduating mean a token is safe or successful? No - graduation confirms the bonding curve reached its volume threshold and liquidity is now locked. It does not guarantee price performance, liquidity depth relative to demand, or anything about creator behavior before graduation.
- Is the trade fee different before and after graduation? No - both the bonding curve and the graduated Uniswap v4 pool charge the same 1% trade fee, collected through the pool's hook rather than a separate AMM pool fee.
