"Only 4 Sells Per Block" Explained: Understanding Sell-Rate Limits on Token Contracts

Why a token contract can limit sells to a fixed number per block, and why your own sell can fail because of other people's transactions earlier in the same block.

What triggers this error

This revert is tied to a contract's internal mechanism for converting collected tax tokens into ETH, not to selling in general. When enough tax tokens have accumulated in the contract, a sell transaction can trigger an internal swap that converts some of that balance into ETH. To avoid one block absorbing too much of this internal selling at once, the contract caps how many of these triggered swaps can happen within a single block - commonly capped at a small fixed number, such as four.

Why your own sell can fail because of other people's sells

Because this check runs inside the same code path as an ordinary sell, hitting the cap doesn't just skip the internal swap - it reverts the entire sell transaction, including yours. This means a sell can fail not because of anything wrong with your own transaction, but because several other sells already triggered the internal swap earlier in the same block.

What to do about it

  • Simplest fix: wait for the next block and retry the sell - the counter resets every new block.
  • This is more likely to happen during high-volume trading, particularly right after launch or during a sudden spike in selling activity.
  • There is nothing to configure differently on your end - this is a contract-level safeguard, not a setting tied to your specific wallet or transaction.

FAQ

  • Does this mean my sell transaction was blocked specifically? No - it means the shared per-block limit on internal tax-to-ETH swaps was already reached by other sells before yours.
  • How often does this actually happen? Rarely outside of high-volume periods - it only matters when several sells large enough to trigger the internal swap land in the same block.
  • Will retrying immediately work? Only if it lands in a new block - retrying within the same block will hit the same limit again.
  • Is this limit the same across every token? No - the specific cap and threshold for triggering the internal swap are set per contract at deployment and can differ between tokens.
