"Exceeds maxTxAmount" Error Explained: What It Means and How to Fix It

What the "Exceeds maxTxAmount" error means on a token contract, why per-transaction limits exist, and how it differs from a max wallet limit.

What triggers this error

The "Exceeds maxTxAmount" revert fires when a single transaction - a buy or a sell - attempts to move more tokens than a fixed per-transaction ceiling the contract enforces. Unlike a wallet cap, this limit applies to the size of the trade itself, not the buyer's resulting total balance.

Why contracts set a max transaction limit

A max transaction limit slows down how much of a token's liquidity can move in a single trade, which limits how much price impact any one transaction can cause. It is typically set as a percentage of total supply at deployment, alongside a separate max wallet limit.

What you can do about it

  • Split a large intended buy or sell into multiple smaller transactions, each under the cap.
  • Wait to see whether the limit is later removed - many contracts include a one-time function the owner can call to lift both max transaction and max wallet limits.
  • If you are the token's creator and this limit is blocking your own testing, check whether your own wallet is excluded from limit checks - many contracts exclude the deployer wallet specifically.

Max transaction vs max wallet: not the same limit

These two errors are easy to confuse because they often appear together on the same contract, but they check different things. A max transaction limit blocks a single trade that is too large on its own, regardless of what the buyer already holds. A max wallet limit blocks a trade specifically because of what it would bring the buyer's total balance to, even if the trade itself is small. A wallet that already holds close to the cap can fail on a max-wallet check with a tiny buy, while a fresh wallet can fail on a max-transaction check with a single oversized one.

FAQ

  • Does this error mean the token is broken? No - it means the specific transaction size exceeds a deliberate per-trade limit, not that anything is malfunctioning.
  • Can I just retry with a smaller amount? Yes - splitting a large intended trade into smaller pieces, each under the cap, typically resolves this.
  • Does this limit apply to selling as well as buying? Depends on the specific contract, but many apply the same cap to both directions.
  • Is this the same as "Exceeds maxWalletAmount"? No - that error is about total holdings after the trade, not the size of the trade itself.
